We arrived at Limericks thirty minutes before Kelley was due on stage, which gave him just enough time to chug a bottle of water and stretch. How the man accomplished a warm up in four-inch heels and a painted-on dress, I’ll never know. It was fucking impressive.

I stepped behind the bar to catch up with Shannon.

“Hey, Pops. I texted you the details of the engagement party. If you need me to come by the house this week before work and help you clean up the back yard, let me know.”

“I think it’s in good shape. I just added chemicals to the pool, so it shouldn’t be too strong by Saturday.”

His ice-blue eyes twinkled with mischief. “So, are you going to tell me what really happened on your trip to the cabin?”

“Nothing. It was uneventful and relaxing.”

Shannon crossed his thick tatted arms over his chest and smiled. “What a shame.”

“Would you quit that bullshit? Stop trying to make something out of nothing.” But it was something lately. That fucking kiss that was hot enough to singe the hair on my balls was definitely something.

“Hey, Pops? That look on your face says differently.” He shoved my arm playfully. “You were always shit at poker, old man.”

I was thankful for the interruption when Aries, a friend of ours and talented tattoo artist, sidled up to the bar. “Hey, Graham. Hey, Shannon.” He barely spared me a glance, his eyes fixed on my son instead.

“Hey, Aries.”

“Hey, Aries. You stop by for a drink?” Shannon asked.

“Nah, I’d rather wait until you make good on your offer to take me out for one.” His breezy smile stole some of the boldness from his words. “I just stopped by to grab takeout and talk to Gordy.”

Just then, my nephew stepped out of the kitchen carrying a takeout bag.

“Here ya go,” he said, offering the bag to Aries.

“Thanks. Have I told you guys how much I love his meatloaf special?”

“I think you mentioned it once or twice,” Shannon quipped, chewing on a toothpick. “Nobody makes it as good as Gordo here,” he said, clapping his cousin on the back a little too harshly.

“Fuck off,” Gordy mumbled, shrugging Shannon off.

“Gordy, you still have that room for rent?”

I eyed my nephew curiously. “I wasn’t aware you were looking for a roommate. Last thing you said was how excited you were to finally have the house to yourself.”

Shannon added his two cents to stir the pot, as always. “Yeah, Gordo. Thought you loved living alone.”

Gordy glared at him before giving Aries his attention. “Yeah, I still got that room, if you want it.”

“It’s closer to my shop than my current place, and the rent is cheaper. Of course I want it. Plus, I’d get to hang out with you more, since you always seem too busy for me lately. The only time I see you anymore is when I have you in my chair in the shop.”

“Gordo, just think of all the meatloaf you could make for your buddy,” Shannon teased.

“I’ll call you tonight on my break,” Gordy promised.
